Mr McCann is a NHS Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and North Bristol NHS Trusts. He has a specialist upper limb interest in shoulder arthroscopy, elbow pain and hand surgery and a special interest in the treatment of complex fractures of the shoulder.

Mr McCann undertakes medico-legal expert witness work for upper limb injuries and welcomes enquiries in his field of expertise. He is not registered for VAT and therefore limits the amount of work he undertakes in this field

Mr McCann has a passion for surgical research and takes an active interest in the academic controversies in both orthopaedic trauma surgery and elective upper limb orthopaedic surgery. Clinical Experience



Clinical Experience

Mr McCann has had a broad training and wide experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. His higher surgical orthopaedic training as a specialist registrar was based in Bristol learning from one of the largest group of shoulder surgeons in the UK. He is adept at upper limb joint replacement including elbow and shoulder arthroplasty. Phil undertakes shoulder arthroscopy using his up to date arthroscopic techniques to perform day case decompressions and rotator cuff repairs. He is keen on the non-surgical use of shock wave therapy for both golfers and tennis elbow pain. He is complimented by many patients on his hand surgical techniques that he performs with a simple local anaesthetic technique. Phil enjoys looking after difficult Dupuytrens Disease. Phil has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register. Phil recommends that patients should always insure they see a GMC registered surgeon to get an accurate diagnosis before turning to physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractice treatments. Phil has a major interest in sports trauma and Mr McCann has a particular interest in modern shoulder, elbow and hand reconstruction techniques with a strong evidence base.

Mr McCann is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care as required by the Department of Health.

Teaching



Teaching

Mr McCann has a great enthusiasm for medical education, on both an undergraduate and post-graduate level. He actively participate in the training of all grades of junior doctors and allied health professionals within a University Teaching Hospital and lectures to the higher surgical trainees locally on shoulder and elbow disorders. He has designed and implemented a number of surgical training courses within the South West region. Mr McCann has also been an Orthopaedic tutor both at the University of Bristol and at the University of Western Australia. His interest in medical education led him to undertake formal training in this field, obtaining the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Bristol in 2012.
