Mr Ian Winson

Ian Winson is a NHS Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Mr Winson is a specialist foot and ankle surgeon and specialises also in Sports Injuries. He is a past president of the British Orthopaedic Association, Associate Editor European Journal Foot and Ankle Surgery, Past President European Foot and Ankle Society and BOFAS. Ian is a past Editor of the JTO and serves on the finance comittee of European Orthopaedic and Trauma Society (EFORT).

Having gone to medical school in Sheffield he returned there for most of his senior training. It was a fellowship in Sweden that introduced him to ankle arthroscopy. He championed arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis in the early 1990's and has been one of the advocates of the evolution of arthroscopic foot and ankle techniques in the European arena. He has been responsible for using arthroscopic techniques to treat patients from top class sportsman through to 90 year olds with arthritis!

Medico-legal



Medico-legal & Medical Negligence Experience

Mr Winson's Medico-Legal Reports are prepared to the guidelines introduced by the Law Society and the British Orthopaedic Association and conform to Lord Woolf's reforms. Mr Winson only undertakes medico-legal expert witness work related to foot and ankle problems.

Research Interests and Publications

Mr Winson has continued to publish extensively research and articles on current aspects of Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Practice. His research interests include clinical foot and ankle research, biomechanics of the foot, ankle arthritis, ankle arthroscopy, forefoot reconstruction and foot outcome measures. Clinical Experience



Clinical Experience

Mr Winson has had a broad training and wide experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. He underwent surgical training in Sheffield. He has been lead developer and user of a novel ankle replacement for osteoarthritis. He teaches on ankle arthrodesis and ankle arthroscopy courses and has developed the technique of arthroscopy of the big toe metacarpo-phalengeal joint. Ian is an accomplished bunion surgeon for all degrees of Hallux Valgus. He has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register. He is a recognised "Provider" in the Advanced Trauma Life Support scheme.

His most common procedure to date is to correct bunions.

Audit



Peer Reviewed Audit

Mr Winson is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care as required by the Department of Health. He has constructed a database of over 5,000 cases of foot and ankle surgery. The audit activity his team undertakes looks at all aspects of treatment regimes including those involved in conservative measures, surgical techniques and post operative care.

Teaching



Teaching

As the past Regional Director of Orthopaedic Training Mr Winson was responsible for the postgraduate Orthopaedic Training Program in Avon, Somerset and Gloucestershire. He tutors medical students, physiotherapists and nursing staff. He has served on the British Orthopaedic Associations Education Committee, the Education committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the Education committee of the European foot and Ankle Society. He continues to be a guest speaker on a wide range of courses both nationally and internationally.
